What to Ask Before Funding an Artist's Music Project

Supporting an artist can be generous and strategically sound. It should not require accepting vague scope, hidden dependencies or promises nobody can control.
Ask before payment
- What exact phase and outcome are being funded?
- Which deliverables are included and excluded?
- Who controls creative approval?
- Who owns the composition and sound recording?
- Are contributors, samples and visuals authorized?
- What is the milestone and payment schedule?
- What creates additional cost?
- Which team members are confirmed?
- What is the communication and feedback process?
- Which outcomes are not guaranteed?
Fund the constraint
If the song is not ready, a large video is not the priority. If the master is final but credits and assets are missing, another recording session may not help. Spend against the actual bottleneck.
Define the artist's responsibility
The funder cannot practice, make every creative decision, maintain the audience or manufacture commitment on the artist's behalf.
